How to wire a Fridge controller 101

OK, this is the down and dirty way to wire a Johnson controls, or similar controller that did not come with a pigtail. You will need a short (6-10') 3 wire extension cord with #16AWG minimum wire gauge, a small "wire nut", and a "2 screw" or romex connector. Ask the guy in the orange apron for it if you can't find one.

When you open up your controller, you'll see that it has either 2, or three terminals. For cooling purposes, we're concerned with the one that is marked "C", or common, and the one marked "Close on Rise". I think the close on rise terminal is usually color coded yellow, but I forget.

After you mount your controller on the fridge, take the extension cord and cut it in 1/2, or cut the "female" end long enough to plug the fridge cord into it and reach the controller. Take the two cut ends and strip back the outer jacket about 5-6" to expose the wires inside. Knock out the hole in the bottom of the controller and install the connecter. Shove the cord with the female end into the connector, and tie the black wire onto the "Close on Rise" terminal. Shove the other cord into the controller and tie the black wire onto the "common" terminal. Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you to strip the ends of the wires, but hopefully you've figured that part out by now. ;^) take the wire nut and tie the 2 white wires together. You should have a green screw on the controller, and this is where you tie the 2 green wire on. Carefully put the cover back on, making sure not to pinch any wires (Right Lothar?), Plug the fridge into the female pigtail and plug the other end into your power outlet.

See how easy that was?

Here is a diagram for a Johnson Controls A419 controller. The main difference is that you must supply power to the controller. You will need to "pigtail" the neutral (white) and also provide a small jumper wire from the "120V" terminal to the "C" (common) terminal for the output relay.

The Ranco controller wiring whould be similar.
